Intersex Pride on Oprah
“I wouldn’t be a ‘regular’ woman if you paid me: this is who I want to be.” — Hida on Oprah
“I find this so fascinating: you literally walk between worlds.” — Oprah Winfrey on Hida Viloria
Sharing my “authentic self”, as Oprah calls it –my intersex, non-binary self which we’re all taught to hide– and the race issues central to my bicultural identity as a Latinx American child of Latino immigrants, was one of the most moving moments of my life! I’m deeply grateful to The Oprah Winfrey Show, especially producer Denise Hendricks and Oprah herself, for having given me the opportunity to do so. <3
“One of the biggest things about embracing being intersex, for me, is not choosing a side. Society pressures you to choose sides, just like they pressure mixed race people to decide… are you really black, are you really white? I have both, and I’m not going to lie about it or deny it or hide it.” –Hida Viloria
“There are no studies that show that being intersex is a detriment in any way, and I feel blessed; I wouldn’t be a ‘regular’ woman if you paid me: this is who I want to be.” — Hida Viloria
