I spoke so much in the 90’s and the first decade of the 21st century about the serious harms caused by medically unnecessary cosmetic genital surgeries on intersex babies — which I and other intersex people call “intersex genital mutilation”, or IGM — that my essays in the past few years have focused on other issues, such as those affecting intersex adults. I realized however, especially now with the South Carolina lawsuit against parents who operated on an intersex baby, that I needed to write about this, and I’m very glad that The Advocate decided to share it with their readers to raise awareness. 🙂 http://www.advocate.com/commentary/2013/09/27/op-ed-why-we-must-protect-intersex-babies
